CHAPTER 10
Elder DâShea contemplated the bloodstone ritual for spans. Possibly doing her own research, for certain making her own plans. Wilsira was quiet as well, perhaps occupied with whatever lead my Mother had given her at our visit.
In that time, Elder Rausery slipped me into the Wizardâs Tower to sit with Shyntre as my teacher of what we knew about the Surface. He and I were better behaved in these latter lessons, having gotten something primal out of our systems. My new awareness of DâSheaâs son had altered how I viewed him.
So damned intelligent. Powerfully willed and educated.
And so fucking trapped.
No wonder the young wizard was so angry and defiant, even when it brought him more punishment. Especially that they refused to kill him for it. I saw more likeness between Shyntre and DâShea than not, especially to imagine a Davrin like my Elder Sorceress imprisoned against her will for two turns in the Sanctuary, held underneath the Priesthoodâs thumb as she grew a baby for them.
At the end of it, when she was at her weakest, they stole him fresh from her womb.
That broke the unspoken rules of the Nobles in so many ways, similar to what my sister Kaltra had done to warrant me coming to kill her. Among the Nobility, even Matrons could be put in the dungeon for this, but the Priestesses got away with it. More than once. My Elder was the last one to be imprisoned for pregnancy, and both DâShea and Rausery had ways to enforce prevention within the Sisterhood.
And they are both worried about Wilsira and her sonâs interest in me.
So was I.
I didnât know exactly where Phaelous fit into all this beyond, somehow, helping my Elder to catch in the first place. But I moderated my mouth and allowed Shyntre to teach. I sucked in all the knowledge the wizards of the Tower could give me of what lay beyond our borders. I didnât want to live out my life as a Red Sister warring with the manipulative cunts and their Sathoet in the Sanctuary. I wanted to see the Surface, but I worried that I wouldnât get the choice.
Rausery and DâShea have different goals for me.
Shyntre could tell. Even not speaking any of this aloud, I wagered the sapphire pendant heâd made for meâfor I had confirmed this from his own grudging mouthâthat he knew I wanted a choice but knew I didnât really have one. He understood the conflict in a way I would never have thought a bua could before I met him.
Elder Rausery tested my retention as she said she would, and she seemed pleased. I learned a lot and we continued my every spare moment. I never reached that level she had mentioned, where she determined I was done.
At one of those lessons, I could visit Callitro as well, claiming at last the gold ring Phaelous said was finished and fully tested to the Headmasterâs satisfaction.
âThis is imbued with one recurring spell,â the young battlemage explained,
